When applied to planning for visualisation, semiotics can help a data storyteller put questions about perspective at the centre of their process. Decisions about visual representation can be made according to the distinction between formal qualities (i.e. shape, colour, position), and how these come to take on meaning. Likewise, semiotics can help us better anticipate what to encode into visualisation, by helping us reflect on the different layers of meaning that the decoder or individual viewer may see. In this way, semiotics helps us understand the importance of perspective, of audience, and of different standpoints. Working from this introduction to semiotics for data storytelling, in the next section we turn to what we call the “Four Pillars of Data Visualisation”: Symbol, Colour, Caption and Editorial.
